Reach Okehampton in just 40 minutes from Exeter. Okehampton station is at the northern tip of Dartmoor National Park, perfectly placed for walks on to the moor (see our recommended routes below).
You can also hire bikes opposite the station and get straight on to the Granite Way with easy cycling all the way to Lydford.
From the station, take the scenic stroll into town through the ornamental gardens of Simmons Park (walk directions).
Okehampton has some great independent shops to explore, not least in the town’s Victorian Arcade, and plenty of good quality eateries.
Explore the Museum of Dartmoor Life, and from April to October take the short walk to Okehampton Castle.
Okehampton station is a great starting point for walks on to Dartmoor. You can also hire bikes right opposite the station and explore the Granite Way multi-use trail to Lydford. Or take the scenic walk into town through Simmons Park (pictured) and explore the shops, eateries, Museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton Castle (open April-October).
Crediton is a lively market town that benefits from a thriving high street full of independent shops. The town is a short walk from the station (which has a great tea rooms – pictured) but it is well worth the trip for its crafts, gifts, antiques, delicatessens and more.
Exeter Central station is located right in the heart of the city, just a short walk from the Princesshay shopping centre (pictured above – photo: Visit Exeter) and the city’s magnificent cathedral. Attractions include John Lewis and other major retailers, the historic quayside, and tours of the city’s medieval underground passageways.
Set off on walks right from Okehampton station to explore woods and waterfalls, cosy villages and rugged peaks.
Always follow the National Park’s safety tips when out walking – especially given the proximity of the Dartmoor military training area.

Hire bikes at Okehampton station and explore the Granite Way, an 11-mile multi-use trail.
The trail crosses the towering Meldon Viaduct with great panoramic views. Stop off and explore the popular Meldon Reservoir. Arrive in Lydford and explore the castle or the National Trust’s Lydford Gorge.
Adventure Okehampton offers a range of activities for families and groups. Book online for small groups (up to 6 people) or enquire direct for larger groups. Based at the YHA next to the station, they offer bike or minibus transport to activities including:

Groups of three to nine people who buy their ticket together get a third off thanks to the Groupsave discount.
On the Dartmoor Line, Groupsave is valid on trains departing after 09 30 on weekdays, and at all times on weekends.
Live locally? For just £12 a year this card gives Devon and Cornwall residents a third off most Standard Off-Peak tickets for you and a friend when travelling in the two counties. You can also take up to four accompanying children (ages 5-15) on the journey for £1 each.
