This article is more than 9 months old.

From taking in the breathtaking views from The Hoe to shopping your favourite brands, Plymouth is the place to be this summer. Forget the hassle of traffic and parking – arrive by train and explore!

1. HIT THE SHOPS

Head to Drake Circus shopping centre (pictured) to browse your favourite big fashion brands like M&S, Primark and Mango. Or, head down to the Barbican and enjoy views of Plymouth’s harbour as you explore quirky independent shops along cobbled streets.

Top tip – check out The Mayflower Steps when you visit the Barbican, close to where the Pilgrims are believed to have left England aboard the Mayflower, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America.

2. THE BOX

Visit Plymouth’s award-winning museum and art gallery, The Box. Meet the towering woolly mammoth, check out the huge Victorian naval figureheads and lots more at Devon’s Best Family Attraction according to the Devon Muddy Awards. Entry is free.

3. TINSIDE LIDO

Plymouth’s iconic, art deco-inspired Tinside lido is a must-visit. Take a dip at this beautiful location overlooking the seafront at the tip of Plymouth Hoe. It’s been voted one of the top 10 best outdoor pools in Europe, so it’s not to be missed!

4. NATIONAL MARINE AQUARIUM

With over 5,000 ocean animals and lots to see and learn, Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium makes for the perfect family day out come rain or shine this summer. Prepare to be taken on a journey around the world’s oceans, from the local waters of Plymouth Sound, all the way to the tropical seas of the Great Barrier Reef and everywhere in between!

5. THE BARCODE

The Barcode is Plymouth’s leading spot for all things food and entertainment. Try your hand at virtual axe throwing, get the whole family involved in a round of crazy golf, or watch the latest blockbusters at the IMAX cinema – all followed by a meal at one of the great restaurants on offer.
