Easter holiday activities at RAMM – visit by train

This article is more than 1 year old.

Just a two-minute walk from Exeter Central station, there are some great family activities at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum this Easter holidays. There is no need to book ahead and entry to the museum is free (activity costs are listed below).

Make a personal silver spoon

Tuesday 11 April 2023 10:30 – 15:30 (£3.50)

Inspired by RAMM’s important 16th/17th Century silver spoon collection, make a very personal spoon of your own.

Design and mould your own ornament, known as a ‘finial’, which can be anything you choose, and add it to the wooden spoon. Then paint the whole piece in silver and even highlight in gold for that luxurious effect.

Puppet mastery: make your own Indonesian shadow puppet

Wednesday 12 April 2023 10.30am – 3.30pm (£3.50)

Make your own Indonesian shadow puppets to take home. Create beautiful characters and breathe life into them by manipulating the sticks to lead them in a performance behind our shadow theatre screen.

A brush with a Roman soldier

Thursday 13 April 2023 10.30am – 3.30pm (£3.50)

Create your very own Roman soldier, including sword and shield, using an everyday style paint brush. Take inspiration from army officers such as centurions, who wore a horsehair crest known as a ‘Crista’ on their helmets to distinguish them from other soldiers – something that was particularly useful for identification on the battlefield.

The Wild Escape – Nature Illustrations

Friday 14 April 2023 10.30am – 1.30pm (free)

As part of The Wild Escape, a major new project uniting hundreds of museums and schools in a celebration of UK wildlife, families are invited to join artist Sarah John at this drop-in illustration session. Within approximately 20 minutes, children will have the opportunity to create a unique artwork based on insects in the RAMM collection as inspiration. They will use collage and pastel to create some exciting bugs and butterflies.
