Tavistock – visit by train and bus

Visit the historic town of Tavistock to discover its bustling market, delicious local food and independent shops.

It’s easy by train and onward bus. Take the Dartmoor Line from Exeter to Okehampton, then hop on the 118 Rail Link bus right outside the railway station.

In our video, Aya and Charlie explore the Pannier Market, have a delicious lunch at Dukes and learn about the town’s rich history at the visitor centre and museum.

They finish their day by taking a scenic walk across the old viaduct and along the river before heading to the Bedford Hotel for high tea.

The train from Exeter St David’s to Okehampton takes 40 minutes. From right outside Okehampton railway station, the 118 bus to Tavistock takes 53 minutes.

Trains to Okehampton depart hourly from Exeter St David’s and Exeter Central, seven days a week. Arriving into Okehampton, head to the bus stop right outside the station to take the 118 to The Bedford Hotel stop in Tavistock. Buses are timed with trains every other hour (see bus timetable).

Adult Anytime Day Return tickets from Exeter St David’s to Okehampton are £8.80. Book on the GWR website or app.

Save a third off the above adult fare for you and a friend (with kids travelling for just £1) with a Devon & Cornwall Railcard – just £12 a year for local residents.
