Hop aboard the charming Tamar Valley Line on Friday 26th April, for a free guided walk from Bere Alston to Bere Ferrers led by Clive Charlton, knowledgable local historian and proud Bere Peninsula resident.
As you take in the views from the train, get ready to dive into the valley’s rich history through Clive’s unique local lens, all while mingling with fellow adventurers.
Clive will greet you off the train at Bere Alston station (see below for train times). You’ll first walk down to Weir Quay, then continue on to Bere Ferrers.
The walk will feature information from Clive’s extensive knowledge of local history including that of the local orchards, farming, mining, past trade on the Tamar and hopefully encountering some blossoms along the way!
The walk is approximately 4.5 miles long and with the amount of rain this year, participants are strongly advised to wear sturdy walking boots or wellingtons (no trainers), as the footpaths are likely to be muddy. Please also bring along a drink and a packed lunch. There may also be time to explore the village of Bere Ferrers and visit the Olde Plough Inn once the walk is finished.
Please note: dogs not permitted on the walk.
This guided walk is free to attend, but you will need to buy train tickets as usual. Buy online or at Plymouth station. To book your place on this walk please email us at walks@dcrp.org.uk with how many places you’d like to book and a mobile contact number (just in case the event is cancelled for any reason).
Catch the 10.28 train from Plymouth and relax as you enjoy picturesque views from your train window along the Tamar Valley Line. Hop off at Bere Alston station where Clive will be waiting for you and the walk will begin (at 10.54).
The walk will finish in Bere Ferrers, with plenty of time to catch the 15.45 back to Plymouth, arriving at 16.04. Alternatively, you could stay at the Old Plough Inn for longer and catch the train home at 17.59 or 19.59.
Plymouth – Bere Alston Adult Off Peak Day Return: £6.50
Top tip – get a Devon & Cornwall Railcard (just £12 a year and now available online) to save a third on the above fare for you and a friend. You can also bring up to four children for just £1 each.
