Guided nature walks from Okehampton station

Hop on the train to Okehampton and join experienced guide Geri Skeens (pictured) to learn about Dartmoor’s vast landscapes on varied and informative nature walks. The walks begin right from the station as your train arrives.

Introduction to Mosses, Ferns and Lichens
Friday 12th May | Sunday 29th October

10:15 – 16:00 | Starts/ends at Okehampton station | 3 miles

Slow down to take a closer look at ‘lower plants’; the mosses, ferns and lichens we might otherwise stride past. These primitive organisms were vital to the evolution of life on Earth and continue to play essential ecological roles.

Woodland walk
Thursday 8th June | Sunday 16th July

10:15 – 16:00 | Starts/ends at Okehampton station | 4 miles

Walk to a beautiful woodland – a fine example of ‘temperate rain forest’.  Take time to learn about this precious habitat and to study some of its amazing biodiversity, including luxuriant mats of globally rare mosses and lichens.

Moorland walk
Sunday 9th July | Sunday 24th September

10:15 – 16:00 | Starts/ends at Okehampton station | 7 miles

Walk beside the wooded East Okement River to reach the open moors and Nine Maidens stone circle. Then climb the boulder-strewn Belstone Tors where evidence of granite quarrying is still visible and continue along a ridge with fantastic views in all directions (weather permitting!). Finally descending through fine heathland and beside valley mires.

Get there by train

Trains depart from Exeter (Central or St David’s) just after 09:30, arriving in Okehampton just after 10:15. The walk will start when the train arrives.

The adult Anytime Day Return fare is £8.40.
