Take the train from Plymouth and see Bere Alston come alive at the village’s annual Victorian evening.
The event includes residents in Victorian dress and stalls, games, Santa’s grotto, food and entertainment all through the main street in the village.
How to get there
An adult Off-Peak Day Return ticket from Plymouth to Bere Alston costs £4.90, which you can buy at Plymouth station on the day.
The 16 39 train from Plymouth arrives into Bere Alston at 17 03.
Then if you don’t fancy walking up the hill to the village, take the local 87A bus which departs from the railway station at 17 06. If you do walk, it is 0.7 miles – see map. Take care and bring a torch as the lane does not have street lights.
Once in the village, pay a visit to the Edgcumbe Hotel where the staff will be in Victorian costume and you can sample a real ale or warm up with a hot drink.
The Victorian evening begins at 18 00, with entertainments all along Fore Street, Station Road and in the Parish Hall.
Getting home
There are only two trains back to Plymouth.
Early birds can catch the 18 52 bus back down the hill in time for the 19 33 train.
For those who want to stay for the whole evening (the event goes on until 20 30), pop back into the Edgcumbe Hotel before getting the 22 41 train.
