Plymouth-Calstock by boat and train

This article is more than 7 years old.

Looking for a lovely day out? Take a boat cruise from Plymouth Barbican to Calstock, explore the beautiful Tamar Valley and return by train on the scenic Tamar Valley Line.

The cruise
Set sail with Plymouth Boat Trips across Plymouth Sound and up the River Tamar to the Cornish village of Calstock. Leaving the city behind you’ll pass the Naval Dockyard and Brunel’s famous bridge, and take in the sights of the Tamar Valley.

Pubs
Get off at Calstock to explore this picturesque village and try its pair of pubs, The Tamar Inn and The Boot, both of which serve great food.

Walks
From Calstock you can take a beautiful riverside walk (2.5-miles) to the National Trust’s Cotehele property, where you can explore the historic quay and relaxing woodlands (download walk instructions and map).

The train back
Get a whole new perspective on your journey back by taking the train across the 120-feet high Calstock Viaduct. The trip back to Plymouth takes in rolling green fields, sleepy villages and beautiful river crossings.

Plan your trip
See the 2016 boat departures and prices, then book online. As well as the Calstock Cruise there is also a variation called the Cotehele Cruise – see website). On the way back, buy your train ticket on the train. An adult Off-Peak Day Single from Calstock to Plymouth is £5.50. Look up train times.
